Magento Commerce

has changed its name to Adobe Magento Commerce. According to a statement made by Adobe and Magento, the popular eCommerce platform gained a new moniker and is now a full-fledged member of the Adobe family on April 21, 2021. The news comes almost three years after Adobe declared in May 2018 that it would acquire Magento Commerce. The $1.68 billion purchase was made to improve Adobe Experience Cloud, the company's marketing and sales suite.

Magento would compete with well-known tools like Adobe Analytics, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Marketo, etc.

The addition of Magento will provide Adobe customers with seamless eCommerce integration, allowing them to use a single platform that serves both B2B and B2C clients globally. By incorporating digital transformation into Adobe Experience, businesses will deploy highly tailored, customer-centric business solutions. For Adobe, Magento, and its clients, this merger appears to be a win-win-win situation.

Before we get into the specifics of what such a transition will entail, let's look back at Magento's history to see what made it one of the most popular platforms on the market.

Magento's Brief History

Magento was founded by two college mates, UCLA students Roy Rubin and Yoav Kutner. Rubin and Kutner's newly formed company got a large contract to develop an eCommerce website. Still, they believed that osCommerce, the most popular eCommerce solution at the time, wasn't up to the task. They constructed their platform based on osCommerce and released it under an open-source license in 2008. The color "magenta" was employed in the logo, hence the name. According to legend, the domain name “magenta” was already taken, so they changed it to Magento, a male variant.

Using open architecture and the most popular framework of the 2000s, PHP-MySQL, was the key to early success. Magento grew swiftly to become one of the most popular eCommerce platforms, earning multiple accolades for "best open-source software." The next major event occurred in 2011 when Magento was purchased by eBay, aiming to expand its community of eCommerce developers. Years with eBay, on the other hand, proved to be rough. In 2015, following eBay's internal business crises, Magento became a different company once more.

The integration of Magento into Adobe Experience Cloud is nearly complete as Adobe approaches the third anniversary of the acquisition. The big news for April 2021 is that Adobe is unifying its brands, and Magento Commerce will now be called Adobe Commerce. (The open-source version of the platform, which will continue to be known as Magento, will not be affected by the move.)

Magento is now Adobe Magento Commerce. What’s next?

Of course, predicting what will come out of Adobe Commerce with confidence is tough. However, a few considerations to consider: Press announcements from Adobe, conversations in the Magento Community, and social network posts might all provide clues.

Adobe is overhauling Magento's code to ensure that it is compatible with the Adobe ecosystem. It means that, while some familiar elements may be rearranged, we'll end up with a more robust, scalable, and streamlined solution.

Adobe Commerce

is already being updated with new features. Adobe Sensei will provide machine learning skills to product suggestion and search; Adobe Sign will introduce electronic signature capabilities. A partnership with WayFlyer will give merchants access to finance solutions that will help them build their businesses.

Magento will undoubtedly continue to take advantage of chances provided by other Adobe Experience ecosystem solutions, employing current technology to meet customer's expectations on a whole new level. It's too early to say for sure, but who knows, perhaps we're witnessing the start of a new era of digital commerce, similar to what happened more than a decade ago when Magento-based businesses swept the industry.

The difference between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce is likely to widen. However, this does not rule out the possibility of an Open Source version. The development of Adobe Commerce, on the other hand, will provide a boost to the open-source solution's growth. Thanks to a slew of new exciting features, Magento 3 is on the verge of becoming a reality.

To conclude; For Adobe and Magento's joint customers, the integration of Magento Commerce Cloud into Adobe Experience Cloud is a game-changer. With the current rate of change in the digital commerce landscape, businesses of all sizes must seriously examine how to provide their customers with the most engaging and seamless commerce experiences possible. True, developing a streamlined and exciting customer experience distinguishes eCommerce of the past from the eCommerce of the future. And now that Magento has merged with Adobe Commerce, this future may begin right now.
